On May 12, 2022, the Shanghai Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences jointly announced the supermassive black hole in the center of our Milky Way Galaxy &mdash— Photo of Sagittarius A * (agr *) black hole, this is &ldquo Event horizon telescope (EHT) ” Another great achievement of the project

“ Event horizon telescope; The project is an international cooperation organization with the participation of more than 30 universities, astronomical observatories and other research units from 12 countries and government agencies. They use Radio Telescope , Form a huge Virtual Telescope , Its caliber is equivalent to the diameter of the earth
At 21:00 Beijing time on October 10, 2019, in Washington, D.C., Shanghai and Taipei, Chile, Santiago, Brussels, Belgium 、 Lingbi, Denmark and Tokyo, Japan will hold a press conference at the same time to release “ in English, Chinese, Spanish, Danish and Japanese; Event horizon telescope; The first major achievement &mdash— The first black hole photo ever obtained by mankind. On April 10, 2019, the event horizon telescope observed the black hole in Virgo a galaxy (M87)
Eht results
As we all know, with the continuous improvement of China’s comprehensive national strength, China has also increased its investment in the field of science and technology, and built a number of world advanced national treasures, including High energy Ring Electron Positron Collider (cepc), 500m Spherical Radio Telescope &mdash—“ Chinese heavenly eye ” (fast), etc However, a total of eight radio telescopes around the world participated in the observation. We found that there is no Chinese radio telescope on it. Is it because our radio telescope is not advanced enough?

Of course not! First of all, the 15 meter James bull in Hawaii participated in the observation; Clark • The Maxwell Telescope (jcmt) is actually in operation in China, and the Shanghai Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as the publisher of black hole photos, shows that it has participated in very important work. There are three important reasons for the current situation:
First, the design purpose is different. The Chinese celestial eye is not designed to observe black holes. It has its own observation targets, including pulsars, fast radio storms and alien civilization signals. Of course, China’s celestial eye is indeed a radio telescope, which also observes electromagnetic waves, but the wavelength range is long, ranging from 1 decimeter to 4 meters. The radio telescope used to observe black holes needs a shorter wavelength, the shortest is only 1.3 mm. The shorter the wavelength, the higher the resolution can be. Therefore, in terms of function, the two do not match.
Second, In order to obtain a large aperture event horizon telescope, several telescopes need to observe the silver core black hole at the same time. In particular, Alma telescope in Chile, as the largest millimeter / submillimeter terrestrial radio telescope array in the world so far, Alma telescope has stronger detection power than Hubble Space Telescope, and can measure different parts of distant galaxies alone. It plays an indispensable role in the whole project, and the observation time for the project is also very limited. China’s celestial eye is located in the eastern hemisphere and is designed using terrain, The direction is fixed and cannot be turned. It cannot make coordinated and synchronous observation with radio telescopes in other areas

Third, the observation of the silver core black hole by eht organization has started very early, so the radio telescope for observation has certainly been determined long ago. The Chinese sky eye passed the acceptance in January 2020, and it was enabled, so it is not in line with the time!
For the above reasons, the observation of the silver core black hole did not involve the Chinese radio telescope. However, China’s SkyEye telescope has been built and operated for two years, making great contributions to China. Recently, three major scientific achievements obtained by China’s SkyEye telescope appeared in 2021, which has attracted global attention. It is said that nearly 500 new pulsars have been found by the SkyEye telescope since its completion, far exceeding the total number found in the United States in the past.
Therefore, we have reason to believe that with the progress of China’s science and technology, not only in the field of astronomy, but also in the fields of big data, artificial intelligence, medicine, computer and so on, China’s participation and importance will be higher and higher!
